Put in the most basic terms, a virtual domain is like home ownership as opposed to apartment space. It's the ability to determine your own address and identity on the web by having your own www.your_name.com/.org/.net etc. It gives greater flexibility in using your web site as a tool...a tool to generate business & exposure. A virtual domain is a must for those who are serious about the web and it's future in their growth. But quite simply, not everyone can afford to own their own domain server and software, and pay for the high speed connections...that's why we do it for you.

Why a Virtual Domain?

There are many reasons for a business or organization to have its own domain. Probably foremost is name recognition. How many times have you searched a name or concept and gone immediately to the company or organization with the .com or .org immediately following its name?

Take for example a mythical community of Mytown. If searching the web for "Mytown" and presented with multiple options such as "someplace.net/communities/mytown" or "travel.org/destinations/mytown" or "mytown.com", where would you go first? If you said mytown.com then you understand the first reason for a virtual domain.

Virtual Domain Packages

This page refers to legacy WebHart hosting services and we are no longer setting up new domains on this system. If you wish to register a new domain and host it with us, please refer to the hosting information for our head office at http://www.vianet.ca/hosting.htm.

The basic virtual domain package is $20.00 per month for 20 MB of storage space, unlimited traffic, 1 administrative account for you to upload new content and download server logs, and 5 email addresses which may be either forwarded or read locally. Additional email addresses may be added for $2.00 per month. Note that the administrative account will NOT receive email within your domain.

We are offering basic database access to both PostgreSQL and MySQL for $5.00 per month for 5MB of database storage. Additional space is available in 5MB chunks at $1.00/MB. Please note that we reserve the right to bill in larger chunks for large databases. Access to the database is via the PHP webscripting language.

Server logs are provided, in NCSA "combined" format. An HTTP error log for your domain is also provided. Logfiles are rotated at month-end. We reserve the right to increase the frequency of log rotation should your site receive a large amount of traffic. If you want a specific log rotation interval, or a size limit, give us a call or email us at domains@webhart.net. We should be able to accomodate your request.
